Not many people know what books can do to your brain. There are a lot of positive effects that happen while reading a book. It can help you become more intelligent and score higher on reading tests. It can also make you more empathetic, and it can reduce the chances you have of developing Alzheimer’s.

Reading books can also help you relax, in a study by Sussex University in 2009, reading can help reduce stress by up to 68%. If you have trouble sleeping, read a book before going to bed, it will help you sleep better.

When you read, it can also expand your attention span. The reason how it can is because it encourages the brain to think similarly in sequence, and spend more time on building a story rather than rushing through each detail. Also, when we read a novel, we read from left to right, rather than jumping from each sentence to a different one in no order and slowly think about the information in front of us. When you use this time for thinking about the story you’re reading, you are taking the time of reading the many layers and how they connect, which can create longer attention spans, especially in children.

The Lady Spartan Volleyball team is off to a strong start this season as they attempt to reach the unknown. A team consisting of six seniors, one junior, and one sophomore, the girls aim to be not only the champions of the City League, but hopefully earn the title of Division or Sectional Champions as well. They’ve been working nonstop in the off-season to perfect every aspect of the game and to grow together as a team. Countless hours in the gym and a memorable team bonding have all turned this group of teammates into a group of sisters.

The Lady Spartans currently sit with a 6-4 record, beating Ottawa Hills in three sets as well as Woodward, and falling to Whitmer after a grueling five sets. Although not the outcome they desired, it still stood as a huge statement game for everyone in the area. Abbey Swartzfager, a senior middle for the team, says that she’s confident the team can take it further than ever before because “the team as so much drive and desire this year, we want to prove ourselves. Last year we came up short when we needed it the most and none of us want to have that feeling again.” The rest of this season should be very interesting as we sit back and see just how far the girls can go.

The power of music

Growing up, there was always a lot of music in my life. My mom enjoyed rap, my brother liked R&B, my sisters enjoyed country, and I like it all. I listened to anything they would listen to, appreciating each different style of music. When I turned eight, I started playing guitar. I remember my cousin teaching me, and the way that the strings felt and the beautiful sounds they created.

I never had much interest in rock as I had not been exposed to it very much until I started playing guitar. Once I heard it, I fell in love with it. A few years after playing, I bought my own acoustic guitar, (as my cousin wasn’t so keen on me borrowing his anymore) and began writing lyrics, using most of my free time to learn different ways of playing.

As I got older, music became so much more than something that sounded good, it became a coping method. Between screaming parents, school, my family falling apart, and struggling with my own identity and mental health, it was always an amazing feeling to block out everything and listen to music for awhile.

A couple years ago playing became too painful for me, as I have been developing carpal tunnel, so I focused more on my vocals.
My voice turned out to be the most difficult instrument to play, and I still continue to learn. Singing has made music much more personal, not only is my music just a sound, it also has developed a voice.

Though I enjoy concerts and challenging myself with new instruments, I feel most at home not when I am performing for someone else, but when it’s just me, a pen, paper, and a guitar.

Graduation

It’s been on my mind since I was a freshman, graduation. High school has been a big part of my teenage years. Now graduation is the biggest part. After high school, I plan to go to college to become an RN.

Unfortunately, many students have not been able to graduate high school due to not passing the Ohio State Tests (OST) required for graduation. This has been something that has affected my family and friends. Thankfully, I passed all of mine so I don’t have to stress about taking them. My family has been a big support with encouraging me to study a lot and helping me with school work. Without them, I probably would still be slacking and not be able to achieve my dreams.
