The Fidget Spinner

0

By Christopher Cook/ LifeAtStart.com reporter

Recently a new trend has swept the streets worldwide. Everyone is going crazy about it. The fidget spinner has become so popular you can find it at almost any store. What exactly is a fidget spinner? A fidget spinner is a toy used for releasing stress and helping to keep focus. It consist of various different materials with a central bearing allowing the toy to spin.
Fidget spinners aren’t actually new, they have been around for almost 30 years originally created in the 90s. Catherine A Hettinger was the original creator of the toy. Part of the reason the spinner’s  popularity has risen is because Catherine lost her rights to the patent on the spinner after not being able to afford the payment. The next owner must have had plenty of advertisement money to allow these to go mainstream very fast.

I have seen first hand how popular these spinners are. Throughout the school there is a significant amount of students with spinners. I myself even purchased one. Though these are popular I don’t see why people came to my car wash to only purchase the spinners. I work at a car wash, and inside there is a small store. The store is convenient but if you’re coming to a car wash just for the store well then I feel bad for you.
These spinners have gone viral but will die out just as quick as the last trend. If they last it through the summer I will be very surprised. Any questions please contact me at [email protected]

Who killed JonBenet?

0

Tori St.Clair/LifeAtStart.com reporter

JonBenet Ramsey was a six year old beauty pageant queen and was found dead in her basement in December 1996.

Her mother, Patsy Ramsey, found a ransom note on the stairs saying if they ever wanted to see JonBenet again they would have to pay $118,000. They called the police just before her father, Jon Ramsey, found her body in the basement and brought her upstairs. To this day, no one knows who killed her but there are some theories.

The first theory is that it was her mother Patsy. Growing up she was also a beauty pageant queen and was a very intense stage mom. Some say she may have taken it too far and hit or pushed JonBenet too hard, and she fell and hit her head. Patsy told Jon Ramsey about it, and they tried to cover it up. Some evidence that points to this being real is that there was a lot of similarities between the handwriting on the random note and her parents handwriting. The note was also written on stationary that was in Patsy’s office.

Another theory is that it was her father. When they did the autopsy they also found out that JonBenet had been sexually abused for years. This made many people look at her father. Also, the same day JonBenet was found, he was trying to get a flight out of country.

The last theory is that it was her nine year old brother Burke. Many say he was jealous of his sister getting all the attention and accidentally killed her in rage. Some evidence for this is that there was two small holes in JonBenet’s neck, and in the basement they found one of Burke’s train track pieces. When they put it up to her neck it fit perfectly where the holes were at.

Because her mother has since died, we may never know for sure how this night played out.

Respect is a two way street

By Rayne Wilcox/ LifeAtStart.com reporter

Recently, LifeAtStart.com received a suggestion through our new app to write an article showing the importance of being respectful to the teachers here at Start. We felt it was important to address this issue.

School is one of our guides in learning and being successful. It is our responsibility to pay attention and be respectful to our teachers who are trying to help us be successful in and out of school. Respect can be shown in a variety of ways. For example, listening to your teacher when they are teaching or cleaning up after yourself are just some ways that you can show respect as a student.

Although we are responsible for our behavior and the effort we give to achieve good grades, it is also the teacher’s and school’s responsibility to help us reach our full potential.

The requirements expected of us are at their all time high. It is not only hard for us students, but for our teachers who have to abide by certain regulations for us to meet these academic guidelines. It is just as hard for them as it is for us. For instance, this year seniors have to take their exams at the same time as the rest of the school. This is not only hard on the students, but it’s hard on the teachers who have to quickly grade the exams in time for graduation.

We need to keep our respect for them. This sets us up for future successes or failures which in the end, fall on us. For example, a student who has a reputation for being respectful to teachers may receive more leniency on assignments. A teacher may not trust a student who has a reputation for being disrespectful.

Determination, focus, and dedication are what we have control of which will determine our future success. Although it’s important for students to show respect to the teachers it is also important for teachers to show respect to the students. Respect works both ways.

Affect vs. Effect

0

By Kasey Brown/LifeatStart.com reporter

Many people misuse the words affect and effect. They are words that have somewhat similar meanings but are used differently. If you want to know how to use them, then this will help.

Affect is a verb that means to influence.
Ex. How will this quiz affect my grade?

Effect is a noun that means the impact or outcome of something. It can also be used as a verb that means to produce.
Ex. as a noun: The effect of insomnia.
Ex. as a verb: A new school rule only effected certain students.
A trick to remembering the difference is that affect comes first alphabetically, and an action (affect) has to happen before you can have an outcome (effect).
Hopefully this cleared up any confusion on the two words.
