Lose the negativity

0

By Sienna Bester / LifeAtStart.com Reporter

We’ve all dealt with negative people or situations in our life. It’s important to have a positive mindset. Here are some ways I find helpful to get rid of negativity.

•Set boundaries – Don’t feel pressured to sit and listen to a negative person. Set limits and put some distance between yourself and the person.

•Avoid complainers – People who complain about everything will never enhance your life. They don’t offer any solutions, only point out the problems.

•Choose your battles – Don’t engage every time someone irritates you. Control your emotions and prevent the situation from escalating. Walk away and ignore it.

•Develop a support system – Try to associate yourself with positive friends or acquaintances. If you find yourself getting emotional, call a friend and calmly explain the situation to them.

•Embody positivity – Remain positive and begin to limit your time with the negative individuals in your life. Don’t let negative people bring you down.

Luck? Or karma?

By Christopher Cook / LifeAtStart.com Reporter
I consider myself lucky, but don’t truly know what luck is.

The dictionary definition says that luck is: “Success or failure apparently brought by chance rather than through one’s own actions.” This infers that there are two types of luck, good and bad. Good luck is associated with health, well being, and good fortune while bad luck is associated with the opposite.

I consider my luck to be good. I have had a few experiences that led me to this belief. Once I purchased food and it cost $2.75. I paid the cashier with a ten dollar bill so the change would be $7.25, right? Well that was wrong according to the cashier who gave me $17.25, a ten-dollar gain on my part.

Another time, I paid a cashier a twenty for something that cost $1.50. My change for that was $23.50, which seemed pretty accurate in my mind, just kidding.

It all seems to be good, for now. Though everything is good at the moment karma states that every action has a reaction. All of these good things could be making up for bad things in the past or foreshadowing bad things in the future. I’m hoping for the first because the latter does not seem appealing.

‘The Velveteen Rabbit’

0

By Kayce Lopez / LifeAtStart.com Reporter
Most children’s books try to portray inclusiveness, individuality, or normalcy, all in the hopes of raising decent people. In The Velveteen Rabbit, a conversation between a skin horse and a rabbit follows the idea of being “Real,” discussed in the form of questions and answers.

Interpreted, the subtext of being real means being and accepting yourself.

When asked if being real hurts, the skin horse answers, “When you are Real you don’t mind being hurt.”

This says that no matter what you go through, bad things aren’t as bad once you accept your experiences.

Another question given by the rabbit is, “Does it happen all at once, like being wound up, or bit by bit?”

The skin horse replies that no, it doesn’t happen all at one, and that its an act of becoming. It says, “Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby,” portraying that becoming Real will take a lot of time.

Being Real doesn’t entertain things that don’t matter because, “Once you are Real you can’t be ugly, except to people who don’t understand.”

This quote was said in one of my favorite movies, Beginners, and resonated with me. I wanted to share this with anyone who feels the same way.

ALBUM REVIEW: Childish Gambino’s ‘Awaken, My Love!’

0

By Joseph Rowan / LifeAtStart.com Reporter

When I first heard Redbone by Childish Gambino, I was honestly surprised. I thought Gambino would follow his style from his last album Because The Internet but he did not, and he changed his style to funk and soul.

A lot of people cannot get into Gambino’s new album, Awaken, My Love!, because of the drastic style change, but I decided to give it a listen. After going through the album twice over winter break, I finally have an opinion on it.

The production on this album is about ten times better than his previous album. Gambino also uses a falsetto voice throughout most of his songs, most notably Me and Your Mama, and it works really well with the synthesizers and guitars. The album has a certain atmosphere that goes with the funk and soul vibe of the production; this atmosphere is used in every song and is almost tangible.

The album in its entirety is a tribute to famous funk, soul, and rock bands from the 70’s and 80’s. My favorite songs featured on the album are Redbone and Me and Your Mama. Both of these songs really show Gambino’s talent.

If I had to rate this album I would give it a 7 out of 10.

What would your rating be? You can tell me at [email protected].
