Baseball blues

I’ve been playing baseball my whole life. It’s always been my strongest sport, and I’ve been playing it since I could walk. I’ve put in so many hours of practice just so I could be prepared to play in high school. My plan was to play in high school then play in college, but over the past few years those plans have changed.

I got cut from the team my freshman year and I haven’t played since. The coaches believed I wasn’t “good enough”,but my friends and family didn’t believe that was the case. Everyone expected me to play all four years of high school, but that didn’t happen.

High school sports are very political. It’s not always about how good you are, it’s about the coaches choosing their favorites rather than choosing who’s best for the team. I felt like I was completely screwed over and everyone else feels the same way. It’s not about what you know, it’s about who you know.

Upward Bound

I am in a program called Upward Bound that is with Bowling Green State University. I have been in the program for two years now, and it has been amazing. I got into this program because my grandma’s landlord, Ms. Caldwell, took an interest in me. She’s a very intelligent, self made woman. She wants me to become more than what I am surrounded by and grew up around. I am so grateful to be in this program, and to have someone caring about my education as much as I do.

Every Wednesday I go to Scott High School to attend my class, called Academic Assist. Not only do they help my classmates and I with our school work, they also take us to events and college tours. They prepare us for college, going into the workforce, and how to be model citizens. Last week, they picked 10 of us to go to a Youth Conference. The Youth Conference was held at Maumee Bay Lodge. We were there because they wanted to inspire the youth more. The conference had students from all of the Upward Bounds across Ohio. There were roughly 300 students there. All of us had these sessions where they would talk about college and finances. In our last session, we heard from a motivational speaker. After all of the hard work we did, they let us throw a party for celebration. That’s one of the dozen amazing events I have been to.

Another event was when they took us to a Toledo Walleye game. This was my first hockey game I went to and I had a great time. I grew closer with my classmates and watched our hockey team lose.

Overall, the program is very helpful. They will make college a little bit easier for me. As a sophomore, they already have me looking at college, and applying for scholarships. Like I said, I am grateful to be in Upward Bound, I would be lost without them.

Turning the page

Over the course of my life I have been reading books. Ever since my Junie B. Jones and Super Fudge phases my reading has expanded. I’ve noticed how my genre of books change with me.When I went through phases in my life like my rebellious, Gothic, and hopeless romantic, I gravitated towards those genres.

As I kept reading, it opened the door for many more opportunities such as writing and creativity. I made the story come to life in my  head like a movie. When the book ended I picked up my journal and started writing. They became an important part of my life.

Books are my escape from reality and in the end they became my friends. I can always rely on them and they make me happy. Overall, reading helped shape me into the bookworm that I am. I still enjoy reading and take most of my days one book at a time.

Future dreams

As a kid, I always wanted to grow up to be someone who helped others. It’s my natural instinct to help people and to make them happy, even if that means sacrificing my happiness. This need to help has influenced many decisions in my life, including my desired career.

Due to my drive to help, I wanted to become a teacher. Nothing sounded better to me than to be the person that helps people get to where they want to be in life and to help them learn everything they needed to get there. Up until this past summer, that was what I wanted to be.

This summer I found a different calling that would get me more money and is in higher demand, but that would require a lot more schooling and money to get there. I found another career that I would love and that would let me help people: dermatology.

I would have loved to go into any medical field, whether it be a Neuro, Cardio-thoracic, etc. However, I also had to look at the hours in which I would have to work. Becoming a surgeon that works in the hospital would mean a lot of days and nights on-call, having to answer emergency calls all the time. Dermatology, however, is a lot of out-patient surgeries that would allow me to have a standard 8 A.M. to 5 P.M. workday. This would allow me to also coach softball on the side, which I’ve always wanted to do, and it would also let me focus and spend more time on my children when the time comes.

Overall, I’m so excited to pursue this career. Even though it requires eight more years of schooling and up to three years of internship and residency, the wait will be so rewarding in the end when I get to do what I’ve always wanted and help people.
