Turned Around

Looking back on my high school memories, I have to say that I’ve grown dramatically. I thought high school was all fun and games. Well I was wrong, I learned the hard way. I did some of my work to make it seem like I was doing something and maintaining a C average. But when I started thinking about boys, parties, and joining different clubs, like dancing and cheer-leading, then my grades started to drop.

Not really caring, I continued doing the activities I wanted. Well, when I got my first D and F on my report card, my parents put restrictions on me. I couldn’t even cheer or dance anymore. I started to reevaluate my lifestyle. I started putting all my time and energy in school and I pulled my grades up.

Now that it’s my senior year, I learned that I can’t do extra activities outside of school. I made the responsible decision to stop dancing for good. I couldn’t let my future down by doing something I didn’t see myself doing as a career. Now that it’s less than five months away from graduation, I’m happy with the decisions I made in my life.

Low-Maintenance Friend

A pet is a wonderful addition to any family. However, I think we can all agree that having the typical domestic cat or dog in the house can be a bit too high-maintenance in some cases, especially for a busy teenager or college student. Allow me to persuade you to consider an equally satisfying, yet lower maintenance pet option: a snake.

After having such a pet in my house for a little over three months now, I can say that a snake is a very enjoyable pet to possess. I should point out, however, that our snake is only a young ball python. As stated before, snakes are very low maintenance. Maytag (our snake) eats just once every week or two, so there are no daily feedings to worry about. His daily routine only includes switching his day/night lights and rewetting the humidity-control towel atop his cage.

Along with low maintenance come low costs, a definite plus for any prospective pet owner. Although the initial cage, light fixtures and similar items are a bit pricey, the monthly purchases of a box of frozen mice and maybe a new lightbulb only come to total about twelve to twenty five dollars, if that. Of course, as Maytag grows, his food will become more expensive, but he will stay relatively small for at least the remainder of the year.

It’s true that you can’t really cuddle with a cold-blooded pet like Maytag, but you can still hold and bond with him like you would with a dog. Their personalities are usually more subtle than those of cats and dogs and maybe even small rodents, but they are definitely unique and fun to discover. And the addition of scales does not make snakes any less cute than the puppies at the pet store. You just have to look a little bit closer to appreciate their beauty. Looking closer actually leads me to my final snake-selling point for this article: a guard snake is probably much more effective than a guard dog.

Number Seventeen

This past weekend wasn’t really that dramatic. Each game was a hard fought battle and each team handled their win or loss with class.

The Kansas City Chiefs at the New England Patriots

Of course the Patriots won. Is that even a question? Julian Edelman returned and seemed to be the spark for the Patriots as they snuck by the Chiefs. It wasn’t a blowout, but the Patriots looked like their early season form and that means trouble for anybody who faces them next. The Chiefs’ 11-game winning streak came to an end. Final Score: 27-20

The Green Bay Packers at the Arizona Cardinals

Nothing mattered until the fourth quarter. You could say that nothing really mattered until Green Bay’s final drive. Aaron Rodgers was faced with a fourth and twenty from close to his own end zone. He drops back, scrambles and completes a 61-yard completion to Jeff Janis. After a couple more plays, Green Bay had time for one more play before the clock expired. Rodgers steps back, scrambles again and throws a 41-yard Hail Mary pass. It’s up in the air and caught by Jeff Janis for a touchdown as time expired. It’s Aaron Rodgers. What else would you expect? He threw a game ending Hail Mary to win against the Lions earlier this year. Now he did it to force overtime. The coin toss to start overtime summed up the game on how badly the officials did their job. The official tossed it up and the coin didn’t even flip. They had to redo it and the Arizona Cardinals chose to receive the ball. Larry Fitzgerald had a 76-yard reception and had the game winning touchdown catch. Final score: 26-20.

The Seattle Seahawks at the Carolina Panthers

The Panthers were absolutely dominant in the first half. They led at halftime 31-0. This wasn’t the case in the second half. The Seahawks tried to make it a game and seemed like they actually wanted to win, but the Panthers played with their emotions. After being up by so many points, they kind of took it easy just to make sure they were healthy for the next round of the playoffs. Final Score: 31-24

The Pittsburgh Steelers at the Denver Broncos

The injured Steelers put on a commendable performance being that they led throughout most of the game. The Broncos just took the lead when it actually mattered. Two great quarterbacks had a great game against each other and only one turnover was created between both teams. The Steelers fumbled once and it led to the game winning touchdown by the Broncos. Both teams showed great sportsmanship in greeting each other after the game and actually having heart-felt conversations. Final Score: 23-16

Wild Card weekend resulted in all four road teams winning. This week, all four home teams won. This means that now 12 out of the last 13 Super Bowls will have featured either, Ben Rothlisberger, Tom Brady or Peyton Manning. Whether it’s Tom or Peyton this year will be determined soon.

AFC Championship: The New England Patriots at the Denver Broncos 1/24 3:05 p.m.

If you’re like me, you’re tired of this Brady and Manning matchup. This is the 17th time they will play against each other and it’s the same old stuff. Will Manning beat Brady? Will Brady beat Manning? Who will finally say they are better? It’s only the once in a lifetime chance they’re playing for. Once in a lifetime? For them, nothing has ever been once in a lifetime. They constantly face each other and seem to go to the Super Bowl every other year. Who really cares what happens this time?

NFC Championship: The Arizona Cardinals at the Carolina Panthers 1/24 6:40 p.m.

Based on Carolina’s past performance, they should breeze their way to a win. The Cardinals had some help from officials in order to get here and I don’t see their luck continuing. It’s a battle of two past number one draft picks and Heisman Trophy winners. Both teams have rarely gone to the Super Bowl, so a win would really be a once in a lifetime experience.

Both one and two seeds face each other and three former number one picks play this weekend. We’ll see who’s really the best of the best.

MLKJ Day: The Struggle

As Martin Luther King Junior Day passes us by for another year, many of us just see it as another holiday in which we don’t have to go to school or work. Everyone knows why it is a holiday, but very few people know how or when it became a federal day of remembrance.

Four days after Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated, plans were underway to dedicate a day to his accomplishments in life. Congressman John Conyers was the first person to propose the idea on a federal level. In Atlanta, people held annual celebrations for King’s work and pushed for nationwide recognition. In the 1970s, several states enacted statewide MLKJ days, but Congress still had not taken action. The campaign for a national holiday began right after he was assassinated and lots of people worked on it for a long time.

In 1979, Jimmy Carter created a bill for a federal holiday, but it was defeated by five votes. Today, Martin Luther King Junior is a symbol of democracy, but the people who were voting on the bill still lived in a time period where MLKJ was seen as the cause for a lot of controversy. At the time, it was the first holiday for someone who wasn’t a president and it was the first for an African American. Even after the setbacks, King’s wife, Coretta, fought for approval of the holiday.

Stevie Wonder enters the scene. The talented musician released “Happy Birthday” in support of an MLKJ day after news of the defeat in Congress. The song was a hit and Wonder teamed up with Coretta King to fight Congress’ decision. The duo delivered a petition with 6 million signatures on it in favor of the holiday to the speaker of the house.

In 1983, Ronald Reagan signed a bill making the third Monday of every January to be Martin Luther King Jr. day. The holiday was to first take place in 1986. By the time it officially became a recognized federal holiday in 1986, 17 states had already done the honor.

Dr. King reminds us, to this day, to always treat our neighbors, friends, and acquaintances with dignity and respect. He represents democracy, kindness, and peace. “Peace is more precious than diamonds or silver or gold.” ~MLKJ
