With summer slowing to a close and fall running in at full speed, it’s time to discuss what’s hot, or should I say cool for men to wear this season.  Most clothing styles are born in New York City and migrate to various cities in the eastern half of the U.S. The western half usually does not follow the same trends that we have here in Toledo because the majority of their wardrobe designs come from Los Angeles. There are many new arrivals on the scene and there is a lot of apparel that has died out. So to keep you updated, I’ll advise you on what you should and should not wear.

pocket teeMen have a lot to choose from this year, from new bottoms to new shoe trends. Shirts have made some slight tweaks that might contrast with previous years. Literally.Contrasting shades are the new thing this year and they are usually found on pocket tees. A lot of them will have one large stripe going across the chest. They’re very casual, but trendy at the same time. So you can look good and feel comfortable. On the right is a contrast pocket-tee. The stripe and the pocket contrast the rest of the shirt. Next we have button-ups. Button-ups have remained loyal ever since the 90’s. shirtThey come back every year, with very few modifications. Unlike last year, button-up flannels are something you should avoid.
]They were the thing in 2014, but not this year. Instead, there is a new material called twill. It’s soft like flannel, but it’s light. Perfect for the fall. Plaid is once again back in the mix as well. So a plaid twill shirt would be spot on

jeansAs for bottoms, the classic denim is still suitable for men. This year, though, try to avoid jeans with large rips in them and always avoid anything baggy. Small signs of wear
and tear are okay, but no giant holes that make it look like you took a butcher’s knife to your jeans. To the right are a pair of skinny jeans with small rips right above each knee. Also this fall we have joggers to work with.
Joggers took off last school year, but they weren’t there for us in the fall of 2014.They will definitely be interesting to work with this year. joggersThis summer,  joggers were made with a khaki or track material. But for the fall, they have switched to sweatpants. You should probably wear them with a tee and running shoes.

You should keep shoes neutral this fall. Any person with the slightest sense of fashion knows that you shouldn’t try to wear any flashy shoes in the fall. Brown is the best fall color, but you could probably get away with gray or navy blue. Although, those colors are best saved for the winter. Men should try and stick to boots this fall. bootsAnd we’re not talking about combat boots which were in and then out faster than we could blink. Pair the boots on the right with some cuffed denim and a plaid twill shirt, and you’ll look like you’re on your way to a fall magazine photo shoot.

So this fall we’ve got a lot of apparel to play dress up with. You can find all of the clothing above at Abercrombie & Fitch, but you will find similar styles at Hollister, American Eagle, and H&M. There are far more outfits to choose from besides the clothing I’ve listed here. You don’t have long before winter hits and you have to bulk up a bit more. The leaves are changing and you’re wardrobe should be too.

Hut- Just Kidding

The NFL is back, and there is already controversy.

The New England Patriots kicked off the season by facing the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday, September 10. The defending Super Bowl champs (Patriots) defeated the Steelers 28-21. This was expected. Steelers have a young secondary, and Tom Brady usually picks apart defenses anyway.

What wasn’t expected was the Pittsburgh Steelers’ headset malfunction. Teams use the headset to communicate with their offensive and defensive coordinators in order to tell the team what play they will run. Pittsburgh’s head coach Mike Tomlin said that they were picking up a New England radio broadcast for the majority of the first half. The Patriots also reported this problem, but reports are saying that the headsets were still functional. The Patriots outscored the Steelers 14-3 while the headset wasn’t working, but the Steelers outscored the patriots 18-14 while the headsets were working. Coach Tomlin told the refs about the problem, but they didn’t do anything. The appropriate response would have been to shut both teams’ headsets off.

This brings up an interesting question. Are the Patriots trying to cheat?

If you didn’t know, Deflategate was the highlight of the 2014-2015 NFL season. Not the Super Bowl. Deflategate. This dealt with the deflation of footballs, which gave one team an advantage over the other.

The NFL has a required psi for their footballs. Each football must be inflated to 12.5 psi in order to be used during a game. Tom Brady and the New England Patriots used footballs that were under that by anywhere from half a pound to two pounds. Not one person on the team seems to know how it happened. The Patriots won the game against the Indianapolis Colts 45-7.

You think there would be some kind of punishment, right? Yes. I mean no. Roger Goodell, the NFL Commissioner, issued a four-game suspension for Mr. Brady. Of course, Brady claimed he was innocent and challenged the commissioner to overturn the suspension. Goodell held the four-game suspension in place after meeting with Brady. Of course Brady was still unhappy and took it to federal court. That judge loved Tom Brady so much that he overturned the suspension.

If my math is correct and the suspension would’ve been upheld, Tom Brady would not have played Thursday. The Steelers would have been favored to win the game and probably would have won it. But I don’t want to get into the should’ve would’ve could’ves. Let’s get into on-field antics.

I noticed in the game that during one play, the playclock was winding down while the Patriots had the ball. It got down to 14 seconds and then jumped back up to 25. The offense only gets 40 seconds to snap the ball. Not 51, which they got to get the play off.

The most critical play of the game in my opinion was a play late in the third quarter. The Steelers had the ball on the one-yard line and it was third down. The Steelers ended up getting a five-yard penalty. So what happened? The Steelers got called for a false start and Ben Rothlisberger immediately became enraged. He complained that the Patriot defense yelled a snap count, which caused the Steelers’ offensive line to jump. They basically yelled “hut” in order to confuse the offense. That is definitely not allowed. Instead of the Patriots getting a penalty, the Steelers got one and had to settle for a field goal instead of a touchdown. That was the difference in the game.

It seems like the Patriots are becoming a very controversial topic. Many people believe that the Patriots are not at fault for anything. The non-Patriot fans believe that they are at fault for everything and should be punished. As the season progresses, we could see the Patriots become the most hated team in the NFL.

History in the Making

The football season doesn’t start on the first game of the year. A football season begins promptly after the prior season. Even though the cliche saying “football is life” is as corny as sayings get, it’s partly true- about 85 percent true, really. After a one to two month break, football season quickly resumes and becomes a five day a week commitment for the next ten to eleven months.

Though for Start high school, this immense dedication usually doesn’t quite pay off. I mean, the game of football is an extremely rewarding experience in itself, teaching valuable life lessons and providing endless unforgettable moments, but you expect your hard work to pay off in some form of team accolades, such as a league championship or a postseason run. However this customarily hasn’t been the case for Start.

Okay, it’s never been the case, save one time. One time since it’s inception has the Spartan football team captured the city league championship. But occurring in 1978, that moment has long been forgotten and has been clouded by a mediocre legacy. The Earth has traveled almost 22 billion miles around the sun since the Start Spartans last declared itself champions, and it looks as if that is about to change.

Start has also not once since its outset appeared in a single playoff game. Never. In its 50+ year life span, the football team has never played beyond the regular season. That also can become a thing of the past.

At the moment of this publication, we sit at 3-0.

At the moment of this publication, we are projected to win every city league game by double digits.

At the moment of this publication, we have a 73% chance at a first ever playoff berth.

And at this very moment, we have already made history, and are adamant to continue doing so.

Teen Dating Violence

At the age of nine, girls are told that if a boy is mean to them, it means that they like you. When the girl turns sixteen she’s in her first committed relationship with a boy who says he loves her, and she believes him.
Two months into dating, the boy starts to be abusive towards the girl, she thinks he’s stressed from work, so she doesn’t say anything about it. As weeks go by, the abuse continues happening. She starts to wear long sleeve shirts and jeans to hide the bruises forming on her body from the boy who said he loved her.
Teen dating violence happens far too often. Girls are taught to tell someone if something like that happens, but how can you do that if the school’s administration doesn’t take action because the boy is the star football player?
I believe that schools need to take more action with this issue that majority of society ignores. This is the generation that can make a difference for the teen dating violence issue. We need to stop looking at the statistics and actually do something about it.
If you or anyone you know are in an abusive relationship, tell someone. You can even call or text TEEN LINE. You deserve to be happy and always remember, it is not your fault.

The phone number for this hotline is  310-855-4673 and you can text TEEN to 839863

My condolences to all the people affected by dating violence.
