Male: Stereotype Breakers

Males are now dipping their toes into the pool of fashion. You could easily label fashion as just female-based, but that would be stereotypical. Gender specific clothing was so last season. Head to toe, guys are changing their style one piece at a time.

Let’s start with shoes. Moccasins are mainly used for comfort. There was a sudden outbreak of these slippers and mostly girls were eager to buy them. Gradually guys began to wear moccasins because why aren’t they allowed to be comfortable too?

There are all kinds of jeans. One specific type that stand out among guys are the skinnies. Usually labeled as emo, goth, or even gay, the wearers don’t have to be any of these things. They can simply enjoy being stylish.

The most feminine accessory I have seen guys wear is scarves. They are usually worn during the fall and winter seasons.

Colors can also be gender specific. Guys are becoming “brighter” with their choices. Pink and purple are not just for girls anymore. Guys are using fashion as their own form of expression.

I believe tough guys wear pink, do you?

Look forward to my next outtake on us females and how we’re breaking the stereotypical mold of the fashion world.

Just Friends? Of Course.

A lot of people say the age old question is whether the chicken or the egg came first, but Idon’t agree. I believe it’s whether boys and girls can be just friends- nothing else.
I have heard you can’t because one person will fall for the other, normally the boy for the girl, but I beg to differ. You might start talking to someone because you’re in an unfamiliar place and this person looks inviting, not because you like them. Who knows? Within that split second of finding that nice looking person, you could make a life long friend. Friendships can blossom out of many things, but wanting to get with them isn’t one.
Now, you might be thinking of all the friends you have and how you met them, and if you’ve ever felt a potential of the two of you being a thing, nine times out of ten you haven’t. Yeah, you might think they are good looking, but who can’t have an opinion? Just because you think they look good doesn’t mean you want anything more. Coming from someone who has a decent amount of single guy friends, I can honestly say none of us has felt an attraction towards each other, and I don’t see that changing. Another personal experience I have encountered was growing up with a boy as a best friend. Even though plenty has changed physically, that magical time of puberty and all that jazz, nothing has changed mentally. We’ve been through thick and thin together, and if you think we have any sort of attraction towards each other, you are totally wrong. We don’t look at each other in that way, rather  as brother and sister.
In this day and age, most people say they can’t because they don’t want to be blamed for being the bad guy if the friendship falls through, and they’ll just say it was doomed from the start because they knew that person would fall for them. Yes, we’ve all asked the question if these people were together, just to get the reply that they are just friends, but they have the intention of getting together, meaning they want to be more than friends. Even though this is a thing, I’m a firm believer that two people can be just friends. Now after being friends for a while, things could develop and become something more, but I am saying that just because you see two people together, you shouldn’t assume they are trying to be a thing.

Just Friends?

“We’re just friends.” We hear it all the time, but do we believe it?

I do not think that a girl and a boy can be just friends. I know exactly what’s running through your mind right now. You’re thinking about all of your friends of opposite sex and how you guys are just friends, but do they think the same? Maybe you are being honest. Maybe you truthfully don’t have feelings for this friend, but have you ever considered them feeling differently?

Men have been walking this earth millions of years ago to do two things, survive and reproduce. It’s human nature. Men find women attractive because it’s programmed in their brain. But let’s not make this bias. Women are also just as attracted to men.

Most of the time the first thing we notice in someone is looks. If we find them attractive then we would most likely try to peruse something with them, but what if you’ve known this friend for a long time? You might not of originally been attracted to them, but now that you’ve got to see their personality without all of the extra feelings, slowly you start to fall for them.

Also, what if this person is a childhood friend? Of course you didn’t have feelings for them when you first met them, but maybe now that you two are older they are getting more and more attractive and this person you saw as a child is no longer a child.

Girls and boys are always going to be friends, but maybe just a little more. In the end, someone is always going to develop feelings.

Start high schools’ student athlete of the month are Haley Gillespie and Ethan Pennywitt

Haley GillespieHLWY

Haley Gillespie is a junior volleyball player. She has been playing for about 7 years now and hopes to continue throughout her high school career .”I was really little when I started playing. I saw my best friend, Mariah Repass, outside playing it one day and just started for fun.” Haley said when I asked her how she got into the sport .  Haley’s journey as a volleyball star hasn’t been easy, in fact she’s been injured numerous times. She’s had a slight tear in her lateral meniscus, ACL, and IT Band; she’s even had some cartilage damage.

All these injuries still don’t stand in the way of chasing her dreams. She hopes to one day play volleyball at either Hieldburg college or Herzing Medical.

In ten years Haley would like to be finished with college and on her way to becoming an orthopedic surgeon.

When Haley isn’t on the court spiking balls, she enjoys hanging out with her team and working out at the YMCA.

She’s also a workaholic and enjoys her job at Steak N Shake. Her favorite place to eat is Subway. “I eat it before every game, it’s tradition.” She explained to me.

Another amazing athlete being recognized this month is Ethan Pennywitt

Mr. Pennywitt is a junior cross-country runner. He started running about 4 years ago. When asked why he started running he said, “I started running to get in shape, and I just like to run.”

Ethan said he’s had minor injuries, but nothing serious.

He doesn’t have any specific foods he likes to eat before a run, he just likes to keep it light.

Ethan might run in college, but he hasn’t thought that far ahead yet.

For fun Ethan enjoys hanging out with friends, watching TV, and playing baseball.

Check in next month for November’s Student of the Month.
